Registration

In Canada, recreational boats under 15 gross tonnes are registered provincially (licence numbers) — federal Pleasure Craft Licence is the standard. Renewal is typically every 10 years for the PLC, or yearly for provincial stickers where applicable.

Operator card

Anyone born after April 1, 1983 needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in Canada. Carry it aboard.

PFDs

One properly-fitting lifejacket/PFD per person, plus one buoyant heaving line and one throwable (if over 6 m). Children under 13 must wear theirs.

Safety gear

Sound-signalling device, flashlight or flares, fire extinguisher (type 5B:C if motorized), and a bailer or bilge pump.

Trailer brakes

Provincial rules vary, but Manitoba requires brakes on trailers above 1,361 kg — check your province's threshold.

Licence plate / insurance

Trailers need plates; boat insurance is optional by law in most provinces but required by many marinas and lenders.

Renewal reminders

Add your registration and insurance documents under a boat → Documents, with expiry dates. AftLog reminds you before they lapse.
