Boat safety equipment list

The legal minimums, the smart extras, and a pre-launch check routine.

  • PFDs — one properly fitting lifejacket per person, plus a throwable device. Check straps and buoyancy yearly.
  • Fire extinguisher — appropriate class for your boat, charged, accessible, in date.
  • Sound signal — whistle or horn; a compressed-air horn with a spare.
  • Visual signals — flares or an approved electronic equivalent (check expiry dates).
  • First aid kit — including seasickness meds, sunscreen, and a thermal blanket.
  • VHF radio or phone in a waterproof case — with a charged backup battery.
  • Tools & spares — kill switch lanyard, spare plugs, fuses, tow line, basic toolkit.
  • Manual bailing / bilge pump — in case the electric one fails.

Regulations vary by province/state and boat size — check your local rules. AftLog's compliance tool and launch checklists keep it routine, not a chore: see how.
