Keeping your boat shipshape!
Winterization Planner
Freeze-up and ice-out timing for your region — and a guided checklist to protect your engine through the off-season.
Why this matters
When water freezes it expands. Left in the engine, block, or manifolds over the off-season, it can crack cast iron and aluminum — the most expensive repair a boat owner faces. Winterizing clears the water and protects the fuel system, battery, and lower unit so the engine starts clean in spring.
Winterize after your region's freeze-up window, before the first hard frost. Commission in spring after ice-out.

Forgot to winterize?
If it already froze with water in the engine: do not crank it. Drain everything, check the block and manifolds for cracks, and call a mechanic if in doubt. Cracked blocks are expensive; frozen-then-thawed ones leak.
